community youth response and diversion program (cyrd)

brighter futures
Ipswich Community Youth Service (ICYS) currently runs the Community Youth Response and Diversion (CYRD) program. CYRD aims to provide a culturally appropriate alternative intervention to police charging and/or remanding young people in custody.
Additionally, CYRD aims to increase capacity for early intervention in the community and alternative pathways that create positive lives and brighter futures.
CYRD is a multi-faceted, responsive approach for young people aged 10 to 17 years who are at high risk of offending or reoffending.
The CYRD program as a whole comprises of four complementary components which aim to engage young people at critical touch-points before a young person becomes entrenched in the criminal justice system. ICYS CYRD are contracted to deliver on three of the four components;
- After hours outreach and diversion service which operates four nights a week and targets young people coming to the attention of police and/or engaging in high-risk behaviour that may result in arrest. This tier seeks to provide transport, pro-social activities and targeted outreach at locations where young people may come into contact with police to divert them from the justice system.
- Intensive case management which operates Monday to Friday during business hours and targets young people at high risk of offending or reoffending, with complex and/or high needs. Intensive case management seeks to provide an early intervention response, with tailored intervention approaches and wrap around support connecting young people back to community.
- Bridging to education. training and employment which operates 2 days a week and targets young people at high risk of offending or reoffending in order to build their capacity in order to re-engage with appropriate educational, vocational or employment pathway.
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural mentoring is the fourth component of CYRD and is delivered by Kambu Health Services, a local Aboriginal community-controlled organisation.
